For Multilingual Learners: Briefly explain terms that may be unfamiliar or that have multiple meanings, such as sleepy, ambitious, generations, estates, immigrants, magnet, discrimination, segregation, concentration, flocked, poured, defiance, body, aspirations, groundbreaking, injustice, and mythic.
For All Readers: Have students choose an article to read from our Celebrate Black History text set. (At junior.scholastic.com, select “Text Sets” in the top menu and click on that one.) Have students complete one of the four Skill Builders under “Learning Resources.”
For Social and Emotional Learning: Encourage self-awareness by discussing these questions: The article opens with a description of Langston Hughes arriving in Harlem for the first time. What is a place that’s important to you? What does it look like? What do you like about it? How does it make you feel?
For Researchers: Have students choose one of the people mentioned in the article or video to research. Guide them to gather information from multiple sources and to present their findings in a slideshow, a brochure, a video, a podcast, or an essay.
